During the late eighties and early nineties the majority of printers were dot-matrix models that worked much like the old fashioned typewriter where a pre-inked ribbon was struck by a type head. Newer technology in the nineties introduced the ink jet printer. These printers used ink cartridges with liquid ink to draw or write letters on pages. Color ink jet printers came along in the nineties and full color pages could easily be printed. This newer technology was soon overtaking the industry and any type of printing device from a computer printer to a fax machine could print pages with ink instead of dot matrix or thermal paper applications.
In the past five to seven years laser printers have become the norm, replacing ink jet applications in many businesses and offices. The laser printer transfers an image onto paper through a heat process that uses a dry toner which is set on a roller drum and then transferred to the paper through a heat process. Anyone using an ink jet or laser printer can get ink and toner information on line or at retail outlets that sell printers. For the most part laser printers are easier to use and a toner cartridge will provide many more pages than an ink-jet cartridge.
